Christi Cooper - Producer, Director, Camera

An Emmy-award winning cinematographer, Christi Cooper grew up in Boulder, Colorado, where she was fortunate to be surrounded by people that nurtured and helped her to develop a strong connection to nature and the outdoors. She obtained an M.S. in Microbiology from Colorado State University and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Regensburg, Germany. After significant time in basic research and teaching at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, she made the decision to pursue her dream of an MFA in Science and Nature Filmmaking at Montana State University. In addition to communicating sometimes very complex issues through storytelling and visual narrative, her primary goals are to combine her research skills and in-depth knowledge of science with her desire to create compelling narratives focused on raising awareness about sociopolitical issues. In what little "free" time she has, she enjoys being a mother and a partner, growing her own food, and relishing in the incredible beauty and lifestyle of Montana.

Twenty-one brave youth are demanding the legal right to a stable climate and a sustainable future. The government and their partner, the fossil fuel industry, are fighting back.

Barrelmaker Productions is currently producing the feature-length documentary Youth v Gov. This film takes an intimate look at a group of youth plaintiffs, ages 9–20, as they embark on the ground-breaking and possibly most important climate change litigation of the 21st century, what Bill McKibben and Naomi Klein have called the “most important lawsuit on the planet right now.” Coined the “modern David vs. Goliath” story, this film take us on their journey as they fight the US government and the fossil fuel industry to secure their legal right to a healthy atmosphere and a stable climate for not only their generation, but for generations to come. What began on Mother’s Day in 2011 with legal actions across the US has now culminated into a federal lawsuit against the US government for our leaders’ collective failure to protect our atmosphere in trust for their future. The youth are joined in their lawsuit by Dr. James E. Hansen – the world’s leading climate scientist and the lead plaintiff for future generations.

As the legal team works to protect these youth’s right to a sustainable future, they unearth evidence of decades of collusion between the federal government and the fossil fuel industry to cover-up and minimize the consequences of global carbon dioxide emissions. YOUTH v GOV follows this historic legal case to its closing and tracks the youth stories of climate impact along the way. From historic flooding in Louisiana to the droughts in the West, from sea level rise and toxic algae along the Florida coast to devastating wildfires, from drastically reduced snowfall in Alaska to dying reefs and contaminated water systems in Hawaii’i, these youth are fighting for their futures and telling the truth to bring these injustices to light. The question is whether the US government will continue to recklessly collaborate with the fossil fuel industry for profits for the few, while daring to put our futures at risk.

21 youth plantinffs and many of their supporters at the Federal Courthouse in Eugene, Oregon on March 9, 2016. This was the first Oral Argument Hearing for the Motion to Dismiss the case that the defendants filed. Honorable Judge Coffin ruled in the youth's favor on ALL counts. The second hearing was on September 16, 2016 and two days after the election of Donald J. Trump, Judge Aiken once again ruled in the youth's favor on ALL counts. The trial is set to take place late 2017!!
